There are two kinds of torture: to extract information, and to prevent information being received.
The second also has two forms:
Personal, sadistic, where the torturer enjoys the certainty that the victim can't think differently or better.
Political, totalitarian, where the torturer attempts to eliminate the possibility of competing ideas and of another principle of organization.
The loser of an argument wins because he is the one who learns.
To be tortured is to be put in a position where you can't learn. Through an error of logic, dictators and clergy and fanatics of all kinds believe that not being able to learn you lose the argument.
Torturers imagine that they establish the truth of their ideas by eliminating the possibility to think differently.
